Hawks hooked on football

The St. Thomas Hawks have been competing in the LMFA for 15 years, and feature plenty of talented players and coaches.

The St. Thomas Hawks are proud members of the London Minor Football Association (LMFA), and have been competing in the league for 15 years. Playing in three age groups, the teams currently practice at Parkside High School, a site that also hosts one game each year.

A lot of the credit for the creation of the St. Thomas Hawks belongs to Moe Brennan from St. Joe’s high school, who was a key builder for the program and still coaches today after 15 years. John Jakobi, another long-time coach, is currently the head coach of the Hawks’ tyke age team. Meanwhile, George McQueen from Parkside coaches the peewees.

The head coach of the atom Hawks is Paul Chapman, who won the LMFA atom coach of the year award in 2015. He also runs a flag league in St. Thomas in the spring called Game Time Flag Football, an initiative that LMFA supports.

In 2015, the tyke and peewee Hawks both reached the LMFA semi finals, while the atom Hawks lost in the championship game. Several players and coaches from the Hawks also participated in the London Minor Football vs. Windsor Minor Football all-star game in November.

About the LMFA
Founded in 1958, the London Minor Football Association provides house league football to boys and girls aged 7 to 13. We teach fundamental football skills, as well as teamwork and sportsmanship in a fun, relaxed setting. There is a place for every child, regardless of size, athletic ability or experience. Our mission is to prepare players for high school football and to create football fans for life.

Registration for the fall 2016 season is now open online. The season’s registration fee of $275 includes the rental of all football equipment, a jersey to keep, as well as a team picture. LMFA has 3 age groups – tyke (7 to 9), atom (10 and 11), and peewee (12 to 13).
