There are numerous minor hockey teams and players that train at Snipe Academy, which was launched by a AAA hockey coach and provides high-quality instruction and programs for players looking to improve their games. But there are also talented juniors, collegiate-level, and pro players who utilize the facility.
For instance, former London Knight Brett Welychka trains at Snipe Academy. In three-plus seasons with the Knights, Welychka, tallied 114 points in 193 games while earning two OHL titles. During his best year, 2013-14, he notched 22 goals and 34 assists for 56 points.
Following his OHL career, Welychka enrolled at Carleton University and played three seasons for the Ravens. He was named U Sports hockey’s rookie of the year, and he finished his university career with 98 points in 72 games (sixth all-time among Ravens despite playing just three seasons).
Welychka then signed an amateur tryout contract with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League in March. In eight games with the Moose, he notched a goal and an assist. And he continues to train at Snipe Academy for the next step in his career.
Justin Murray is another talented player who trains at Snipe Academy. The 19-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the OHL’s Barrie Colts, and was named team captain last fall. Murray plays a strong defense for the Colts, and in 193 games has also tallied 68 points.
“Last summer, I really needed to focus on improving my shooting,” said Murray. “And Snipe Academy is definitely the best place in the city to do that. It’s a brand-new facility with top-of-the-line equipment. And the staff all know their stuff. In order to have a good training facility there has to be a mix of good equipment and trainers, and Snipe Academy has both.”
